Key stage 3

The Carlton Academy offers a two-year Key Stage 3 curriculum in Years 7 and 8. The curriculum offers students opportunities to study a broad and balanced range of subjects that will lead to them making guided choices, or Options, for GCSE study at the start of Year 9.
The curriculum is designed to effectively support young people in making excellent progress and for them to experience a wide range of subjects and transferable skills, with a rigorous focus on English and Mathematicss.
In Year 7 and 8, students will study the following subjects:
  • English - 4 hours per week - this includes an hour of Accelerated Reading
  • Maths - 4 hours per week
  • Science - 3 hours per week
  • Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (PRE) - 1 hour per week
  • Physical Education - 2 hours per week
  • Geography - 1 hour per week
  • History - 1 hour per week
  • A Language (either French or Spanish) - 2 hours per week
  • Design Technology - taught as a rotation of Resistant Materials, Electronics and Food - 2 hours per week
  • Art - 1 hour per week
  • Music, Drama and Dance - 1 hour per week for each subject
  • Computing (ICT) - 1 hour per week

 

Students in year 7 and 8 are grouped by ability in English, Maths and Science classes. These groupings are based on Key Stage 2 National Curriculum levels and teacher assessments. Students entering with below Level 4 National Curriculum level at the start of year 7 have an extra hour of English each week on their timetable.
All practical subjects are taught in mixed ability groupings.
