Governance at The Carlton Academy

The Local Academy Board provides strategic direction for The Carlton Academy and helps drive improvements in standards, by:

  • Setting targets
  • Setting policies to achieve the targets
  • Monitoring results

Much of the work is carried out directly during Local Academy Board (LAB) meetings. All members of the LAB have a strategic responsibility linked to a member of the Leadership Team.  Link meetings take place half termly between the LAB member and their link to review priorities and the impact of work taking place in the school. A link Governor visit form is completed after each visit, a copy of which is shared with all members of the LAB.

In addition, work concerned with the Academy's finances, staffing and premises is conducted by the Governors' Business Committee.

Each year we elect a Chair and Vice Chair of the LAB. They are supported in their work by a Clerk to the Governors who advises on points of procedure and law and minutes meetings. The LAB membership is comprised of:

  •  Parent Governors elected by parents;
  •  Staff Governors elected by staff; and
  •  Co-opted Governors appointed by the LAB.

The current Chair of the Local Academy Board is Mr Stephen Mathers. To contact Mr Mathers, please make contact with Miss E Hall, (Clerk to the Governors) via email to or telephone: 0115 9520010.
