ECO Days

The Carlton Academy is committed to providing all students many opportunities to both extend and enrich their learning experiences in school. As part of this, we run three ‘ECO’ days per year: ECO
standing for Enriching Curriculum Opportunities. There will be three of these days per year involving all students and staff across the Academy – to facilitate this, the normal timetable will be suspended for all students on these days.

The comprehensive seven-year ECO programme runs across all school years from 7 to 13. The ECO Days provide learning opportunities in the form of in-school educational activities, visits from external agencies and groups, events and trips. Each age-appropriate day is curriculum-focussed linking directly to aspects the wider curriculum including the promotion of fundamental British Values, Social, Moral, Spirtual and Cultural (SMSC) education, Careers Education and Guidance, Enterprise, Citizenship and Sex and Relationship Education. There are also many cross-curricular links to curriculum subjects studied in school.

The dates of the three ECO Days for the year 2018-19 are:

  • ECO Day 1 - Friday 21 September 2018

  • ECO Day 2 - Wednesday 6 February 2019

  • ECO Day 3 - Tuesday 23 July 2019

Examples of days that took place in previous include:

  • International Day (Year 7)
  • National Enterprise Challenge (Year 9)
  • Careers (Year 10)
  • 999 Day (Year 7)
  • Brain Day (Year 8)
  • Democracy and Citizenship including a trip to the Galleries of Justice (Year 13)
  • Exam Success! (Year 11)

Typically the programme for each year group includes one trip and two in-school activities. Where appropriate, these activities are led by our staff although frequently outside providers and deliverers are brought into school to support the days and enhance the learning experience of our students.

The ECO days are compulsory to all students and all of the 'in school' days are provided at no cost to parents or families. The trips are designed to have high learning value and support curriculum subjects with each trip incurring a maximum cost of  £20 per student to ensure that all trips are affordable and good value to parents. If needed, financial assistance is available for families by contacting the school reception.

A full evaluation with staff and students is undertaken after each ECO day to support planning for future days. There are also provide a number of images taken on each of the days.
